How to Prepare for Chardham Yatra: Health & Documentation Guide
Pandit Ramesh Shastri•2026-06-20
The Chardham Yatra, covering the holy shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, is one of the most sacred spiritual pilgrimages. However, since the shrines are located in high-altitude zones of the Himalayas, preparation is key to a safe and comfortable Yatra. Here are essential preparation tips from our pilgrimage experts.
## 1. Mandatory Yatra Registration
Every pilgrim must register with the Uttarakhand Tourism Board before commencing the journey. You can register online or through biometrics at local transit hubs. ABC Holidays coordinates all registration passes for our booked clients.
## 2. Health & Altitude Acclimatization
The shrines are located between 10,000 to 11,500 feet above sea level. Oxygen levels are lower, which can cause mountain sickness.
* Start regular cardio exercises (walking, jogging) at least a month before the trip.
* Carry a portable oxygen canister.
* Rest and drink plenty of water; do not rush the climbs.
* Undergo a medical fitness checkup, especially if you have asthma or heart issues.
## 3. Options for the Trek
* **Ponies & Palanquins:** Available at Yamunotri and Kedarnath. Rates are fixed by the local union.
* **Helicopter Bookings:** Recommended for seniors or those with health conditions. These must be booked 3-4 months in advance.
## 4. Packing List
* Thermals, heavy woolens, and windproof raincoats (weather in the mountains is highly unpredictable).
* Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip.
* Personal first-aid kit containing pain relievers, band-aids, cold medicines, and personal prescriptions.
